In-field support services and consultation to architects, structural engineers, architectural conservators, restoration contractors, construction managers and property stewards to assist in planning, development and project management for heritage conservation projects and at existing structures.
Support -- Specialists in probes, core, and test sample extraction, as well as providing site support services during design team investigations. A long list of NYC Department of Design and Construction probe projects in libraries, police stations, theaters and at other public cultural sites. We have assisted design teams, architects and structural engineers, in provision of logistic and support services on a number of exterior and interior condition surveys of historic structures.
Boutique Projects -- Specialized in small scale projects that require a specific need or skill set, detail planning, as well as decades of experience in hands-on work with historic fabric. Not a General Contractor, nor specialized in any one particular aspect of the building trades. The projects selected are usually because there is nobody else available that understands what is needed to be done. We have a network of traditional trades practitioners to draw from.
Large Projects -- We have an alliance with several contractors that we work with where we provide independent project management services. In general these are negotiated design-build projects where we have worked with the property stewards and their team in development of their projects, as well as assisting in value engineering . These projects range in size from $100,000 to $2M.
Hands-on Competence -- Probes, mock-ups, material sample extraction, historic restoration, Ruregold FRCM, Cintec, micro-abrasive masonry cleaning, masonry murals, Guastavino tile consulting, historic tile work, site-sopecific artwork, window restoration, fireplace mantles, cemetery work, site logistics, taking things apart then putting them back together again, carpentry & masonry.
Consulting -- Projects range from general business development, strategic market planning, construction feasability, traditional trade networking, helping people get through sticky and unpleasant situations, and conceptual budget estimates specific to historic work. Ken Follett was a founding member and first past president of the Preservation Trades Network (PTN). To date between Ken & David they have been involved with five National Trust HOPE Crew projects. The most recent being at the John & Alice Coltrane House, Dix Hills, NY. Currently Ken is a member of the board of directors for the Association for Preservation Technology Northeast (APTNE). He is also a Lifetime member of PTN and chair of the International Trades Education Symposium (ITES).
